Forty Iowa State University students contributed to designing and building the Spectrum Solar Car. A team of 18 students worked as support crew for the 2003 American Solar Challenge race from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California along Route 66, a 2,247 mile event.
The welded aluminum frame and honeycomb carbon fiber composite body weighs 550 pounds without the driver. 2,564 solar cells produce 3.7 volts each and together form an 80 volt solar array. 494 lithium polymer batteries couple to create a 92 volt battery with a capacity of 5.2 kilowatts. Maximum power outputs include a solar array of 1,400 watts (1.9 horse power) and an electric motor with 7,500 watts (10 horse power). On a sunny day, the top speed of 72 mph can be maintained for about 2 hours. On a cloudy day, a speed of 35 mph can be maintained for about 5 hours (175 miles). A dead battery can be fully charged in roughly 8 hours of sunshine.
