November 4th, 2012 from 2:00pm until 3:00pm
Host: Don Johnson
Cost: Free

Learn about the last dinosaurs to roam the earth over 65 million years ago including Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, duck-billed dinosaurs, raptor dinosaurs, armored dinosaurs, ostrich-like dinosaurs, and more. Some of the fossil bones of “Laura, the Duck-billed Dinosaur” will be on display (learn more at www.paleoproject.org). See other genuine dinosaur fossils including bones, eggs, teeth, and claws! View dinosaur replicas and models including a T. rex jaw, duckbill skull and skin, dinosaur nest, and raptor skeleton just to name a few. Examine small fossils of other plants and animals that lived at this time. Was T. rex a scavenger or a predator? How fast did T. rex grow? What do the shapes of dinosaur teeth tell us about their diet? How did the duckbills chew their food? What made raptor dinosaurs such vicious killers? Did dinosaurs care for their young? Why did these dinosaurs go extinct? Are dinosaurs still with us today? Get answers to these questions and more. Come prepared to ask your questions as well. Don will share his experiences hunting for dinosaur fossils in the badlands of South Dakota and Montana to conclude the program.

November 11th, 2012 from 2:00pm until 3:00pm
Host: Don Johnson
Cost: Free

What progress has been made recovering the bones of a mammoth discovered recently near Oskaloosa, Iowa? What is the difference between a woolly mammoth and a Columbian mammoth, and did both live in Iowa? Learn about other animals living in Iowa during the Ice Age (2.6 million years ago to about 12,000 years ago) including the giant short-faced bear, the American lion, gray wolf, giant ground sloth, and more! Compare to similar animals that lived elsewhere during the Ice Age such as the giant cave bear, saber-toothed cat, and dire wolf. How were the shape and structure of the teeth of various Ice Age mammals specially adapted to their diets? See and touch mineralized bones of Ice Age creatures including mammoths, mastodons, horses, bison, and deer. View replica skulls of the saber-tooth cat Smilodon and the dire wolf from the La Brea Tar Pits in California. Artifacts of Paleolithic man will be used to help recreate the Ice Age world of North America. Are we able to answer the question "Why did many of the large Ice Age mammals go extinct?"

Nov 18th - Fossil Guy - Become a Paleo Private Eye

November 18th, 2012 from 2:00pm until 3:00pm
Host: Don Johnson
Cost: Free

What does it take to be a “paleo private eye”? How do you properly collect and preserve fossils? What can we learn from fossilized bones, eggs, skin, footprints, poop and more? In what kinds of environments did these ancient animals live? What can we learn from microfossils from ancient streambed deposits? A special focus will be placed on the world of Late Cretaceous Dinosaurs, and on the world of Oligocene mammals from the White River Badlands. See and touch real dinosaur and mammal fossils, and the fossils of other plants and animals that lived with them. Look at tiny fossils using a microscope and magnifying glasses. Search through modern anthills to find more of these tiny fossils. Identify fragmentary fossils and learn the lessons that they teach. How do you make cast replicas of fossils, and why are they important in paleontology? See these ancient worlds as complete balanced ecosystems consisting of plants, invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. You’ll be ready to go on the hunt yourself for clues to unanswered questions after attending this program.
